Welcome to 2024! I hope everyone had a great summer with time to relax and refresh. I was fortunate to spend time with family away from the phone and computer, but it didn’t take long to start thinking about what I wanted to achieve for 2024 in Tamaki, in Government and for ACT. It’s going to be a great year and we’ve hit the ground running.
This week, as Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety, I announced a 2% increase to the minimum wage striking the right balance between protecting the wages of the lowest paid Kiwis and labour market settings that encourage employment. For context, the minimum wage increased nearly 50% from 2016-2023 when inflation increased by around 25%. This Government’s approach sets the balance right. Our economy should work for both workers and business.

As Minister for Internal Affairs, I announced that the Government is delivering on its commitment in the ACT-National and NZ First-National coalition documents to enable public input into expanding the scope of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into COVID-19 and will start feedback next week. You can read details here.
Back in Tamaki, it’s been wonderful to see people enjoying our beautiful beach front, parks, and cafes. I popped out to visit the St Heliers Arts and Craft Market for Auckland Anniversary Day and look forward to seeing more of you at our local events this year.

Speaking of events, I will be bringing the Police to my first community event for 2024 on Friday 23 February. Last year, many locals raised concern about crime and safety in Tamaki. This is your chance to hear directly from Police about their work in Tamaki and raise concerns directly. Please RSVP to [email protected] to help us plan for refreshments.

I will be joining the ACT Round the Bays walking team in a few weeks. If you’d like to sign up and walk (not run) with a friendly bunch please register for our group here. Everyone welcome. Pink is not required, but it will help others spot the right group on the day!
