Signing Off

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your loved ones!

Wherever you spend the holiday season, I hope you get the chance to unwind, reflect and most importantly relax.

As I sign-off for 2024, I feel very thankful for the support of our wonderful community who stop for chats, give a wave from cars, or email through ideas to our office. I’m also thankful for my Tāmaki electorate office staff Jaden, Jan and Cynthia who go in to bat for constituents every day.

The generosity of our community and effort of our team was on full display last Friday when we hosted Women’s Refuge for a Community meeting. So many of you showed up to donate gifts to mums and kids who’d be finding themselves away from home this Christmas. A big, BIG, thank you for the overwhelming level of support you showed to Kiwis in need.

The Christmas spirit was clearly in the community. I met some wonderful young students at Glendowie Primary who’d teamed up with Home Instead to colour in and deliver Christmas Cards to the residents at St Andrew’s Village in Glendowie. It was so lovely to see our young people delivering Christmas cheer to our local seniors.

Speaking of Retirement Villages, it was a real pleasure to attend the opening of Summerset St Johns. I’ve driven past the development and so looked forward to getting a peek inside, and it was worth the wait! What a stunning facility! I met many new residents who’d moved in from only a few streets over and I know there will be more who will make this new development home. We’re very lucky to have another new village so our community have more options to retire in the areas they know and love.

With the end of year and Christmas, it’s also been Prizegiving season. I love attending prizegivings and seeing the joy on both students and parents’ faces. Last week, I attended the Glenbrae School prizegiving. A big congratulations to all the parents who’ve supported our students through the year and shared in the successes and stresses of school. I hope you all enjoy some time away this summer.

Down in Wellington, it’s been a busy month announcing policies to support a more flexible labour market which will help build business confidence, growth and more and better jobs for workers. If you missed it, I’ve announced the minimum wage is increasing next April to $23.50, I’ve directed my officials to try again on Holidays Act reform so both managers and workers will be better placed to understand how much to pay workers, and policies ensure poor performance at work is not rewarded. There’ll be more to do next year!

Back in Tamaki, our Meadowbank office will be taking a break and will be back up and running from 13 January. From all of us, I hope you have a great summer and see you in 2025!

Simon
