Here to Help!

The Tāmaki Electorate office has officially closed our 200th case since establishment in post-election. We’re not talking emails and enquiries, but people in our community we have assisted with cases ranging from assisting into housing, immigration visa processes, education and access to schools, police files, disability support and more. Thank you to Jaden, Jan, Cynthia, and Felix for their work in the office each week ensuring our electorate gets the best care and support navigating personal challenges. If you ever need our help, our phone is 09 574 1345 and we’re based at the Meadowbank Mall. Feel free to get in touch.

The weather hasn’t been the greatest, but that hasn’t stopped us getting out! This month, I visited the local shops on Kupe St to hear how they are with the roadworks. Unfortunately, some shop owners said their revenue has been 70% down for months. I’m very hopeful that now the traffic lights are operating, business will start picking up again. I know times are tough, but if you have a spare few dollars behind the couch, consider supporting local.

It was wonderful to meet so many locals at my coffee catch up this month in Orakei, hear what’s on your minds over hot chocolate, and answer questions. Our coffee catch ups are a way of bringing our electorate office and support out into the community for those who may not find their way to Meadowbank. I also visited both Summerset St Johns and Oceania Meadowbank Retirement Village and talked to seniors of our community. Wow, what engaged groups with so much experience to offer! I met a few retired teachers and one principal eager to offer thoughts on the current education system. I heard about the need for more parental responsibility in education and manners. I don’t think anyone would disagree.

Speaking of schooling. I popped along to Glenbrae School to virtually show students around Parliament, with my Youth MP for Tāmaki Mikaela Renner in tow. Our electorate office reached out to all local schools to offer to bring in Parliament’s free-to-use digital programmes to teach Kiwi kids about democracy, what it looks like and why it’s important. Glenbrae took up the offer. It was such an awesome time, and I know many students went away excited about the prospect that they one day, could be the Youth MP for Parliament and experience it first-hand like Mikaela. I also welcomed Glendowie College students to Parliament and shared a few insights about the role of a local MP vs being a Minister vs being a political party deputy leader. I hope they enjoyed their trip to the Capital!

This month I’m back with another community meeting, this time bringing Auckland Age Concern CEO Kevin Lamb to talk about all the services they offer our local community including Ageing Well, Social Connection, and Ethnic Community Services. If you’re interested for yourself or know a senior member of our community that may like to come along and learn more, please do come! It’s Friday 22 August at St Chad’s Church in St Johns from 1:30-2:30pm. Coffee, tea and biscuits provided.

As always, it’s a pleasure serving the community.
