Become a Youth MP

I'm seeking a student from the Tāmaki Electorate to represent our community in the 2025 Youth Parliament!

As a Youth MP, you will have the opportunity to participate in parliamentary process and represent our electorate.

During the two Youth Parliament sitting days in July, Youth MPs will debate legislation, sit on select committees, and ask oral questions of Government Ministers.

Activities for Youth MPs during their entire tenure period from 23 April to 29 August 2025 will include:

  • Full parliamentary training to prepare for their roles.
  • Meeting with the MP who selected them.
  • Participating in activities in association with the MP who selected them, such as attending engagements with their MP to experience ‘a day in the life’ of an MP.
  • The opportunity to carry out an individual or group project on topics/issues of importance to young people.
  • Researching the topics to be discussed at Youth Parliament, and consulting peers to understand their views.

To apply you must be between 16–18 years of age as of Friday 28 February 2025 and live in or attend school within the boundaries of the Tāmaki Electorate.

If you are 17 years or under as of Friday 28 February 2025, you must get consent from your parent or legal guardian to apply for the role.

Please note costs related to attending Youth Parliament will be covered by the Ministry of Youth Development.

What is the selection process?

  • Applications are open from Monday 3 February to Friday 28 February.
  • Once applications close, the electorate team and I will create a shortlist of candidates. The Tāmaki Electorate Office team will be in touch to notify you if you have made the shortlist.
  • The Tāmaki Electorate Committee – which is made up of constituents within the electorate – and I will meet to decide on the best candidate to represent Tāmaki at the 2025 Youth Parliament.
  • On Wednesday 23 April, the successful candidate will be contacted to confirm their place as the Youth MP for Tāmaki.
  • On Monday 28 April, the 2025 Youth Parliament programme will begin, with training commencing for the Youth MP.
  • On Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 July, the Youth MP will travel to Wellington to attend Parliament for two sitting days.
  • On Friday 29 August, the Youth Parliament programme ends.
